August 4, 2004 was a very bad day for Drew Patterson, age 27, of Bristow, Oklahoma.
On that day a defendant in a criminal case being heard in Creek County District Court ran down the center isle of the courtroom and right out the door, leaving the judge, sheriff’s deputies and lawyers in his wake. The man was charged with assault and battery on an officer.
The escaped man immediately became the subject of a large scale manhunt in a town previously terrorized for 37 days during a manhunt for an accused murderer a few months earlier. During the earlier search many residents of the area had armed themselves and were ‘on-alert’ for the accused killer.
As news of the escaped prisoner spread throughout the small town, the rumor mill went into full production with various rumors having it that the escaped prisoner was either the cellmate of the accused murderer or the accused murderer himself.
Mr. Patterson decided to take precautions in case the escapee showed up in his neighborhood. He armed himself with a 22 caliber pistol. One with the hammer cocked. And one which he stuck inside his belt at the back of his pants.
Yeah, you guessed it didn’t you?
When Mr. Patterson later tried to pull the weapon from his belt it caught on his clothing and discharged with the bullet striking him in the left buttock.
News media reports quoted the unfortunate Mr. Patterson as saying:
“At first, I didn’t feel anything at all. Then about 30 seconds later, I felt that burning, stinging.
Mr. Patterson went on to indicate that while examining the source of the stinging that he discovered his left buttock was bleeding and that he felt something warm running down his left leg.
Patterson then walked into his parents home, where the shooting occurred, and announced, “Mom, I did something bad.”
Mr. Patterson’s parents took him to a local medical center where his wound was cleaned, treated and dressed.
Meanwhile, police upon learning of the gunshot and wounded man interrupted their search for the escaped prisoner to investigate the shooting incident.
The escaped prisoner has not been caught as of the time of this writing.
Mr. Patterson is reportedly recovering from his wound and his embarrassment and according to news media reports has vowed to starting “Watching what I’m doing“.
