It is not every day that the Chief of Police is arrested for public drunk. So when such an arrest happens it is big news, especially in the Ottawa County town of Fairland, Oklahoma.
On June 10, 2005 Fairland, Oklahoma Police Chief Clint Walker, age 30, was arrested by a Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper on a charge of public intoxication. Walker, who had been appointed Police Chief only 8 days earlier, had been drinking at a bar across the street from the police department.
Walker came to the attention of the trooper when he called from the bar to request an investigation of an accident involving a Fairland Police Department vehicle parked in front of a bar which is across the street from the city hall. When the trooper arrived, Walker became belligerent and began trading insults with the individual who allegedly backed into the Fairland patrol vehicle. During the altercation, another Fairland officer took Walker into city hall to calm him down. Walker was arrested when he returned to the sidewalk and began arguing with the driver and several bystanders.
Following his arrest Walker was lodged in the Delaware County Jail, rather than the Ottawa County Jail where he would possibly come into contact with persons he had arrested. After spending six hours in the jail Walker was released on bond.
On June 13, Walker pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $85 and was suspended with pay. The Fairland Board of Trustees set a special meeting to determine Walker’s future with the department for the following Monday.
On June 20, Walker submitted his resignation prior to the special meeting of the Fairland Board of Trustees. In his resignation letter Walker said he was leaving the position due to ‘a new employment opportunity’.
Walker’s resignation left the department with only two full-time officers. Walker was the third police chief the town has had in only two years. The town of Fairland pays its patrol officers a salary of $19,200 a year, with no benefits. The chief of police earns $24,000 a year, with no benefits. No successor to Walker was named as town officials decided to take some time to let things ‘settle’ before appointing a new police chief.
