Terror In Talihina – Part 1
When Owens returned her sons to school on the day of their arrest, she spoke with Angela Rogers and asked why Rogers had called the police rather than calling her regarding the boys conduct. Owens tells Bubbaworld that Rogers indicated to her that she had no choice in the matter.
Owens revealed that on the day following the tumultuous school board meeting, she learned that the Talihina Schools had no policy regarding the reporting of crimes allegedly committed by students while away from school but that the school system’s attorney was in the process of drawing up just such a policy. This of course gives rise to the question of how Rogers could have had no choice in the matter when an official policy addressing such issues did not exist at the time she called the police rather than the boys’ mother.
Throughout this scandal, Julie Owens has made it quite clear that her boys were wrong to be involved in stealing the man’s newspaper. She has punished her sons for their behavior. The boys have apologized to the man whose newspaper was stolen and they will be performing ‘community service’ for him by cleaning his yard to make amends for their misbehavior. The boys have been ‘taught a lesson’ and by their mother, as it should be. Now Julie Owens, with broad community support, has vowed to teach a much needed lesson to both the Talihina Schools and Police Department.
Julie Owens is not one to sit back and wait for an ‘independent investigation’ on the part of the school system or action on the part of the Talihina Town Trustees, one of whom, the mayor, is married to Police Chief Jack England. She has taken her cause to the public via a report on KHBS/KHOG television which not only featured an interview with Owens but also footage of the school board meeting. She has been interviewed and her children’s case reported upon by the Daily Oklahoman and the Poteau Daily News and other media outlets, and she is not resting yet.
On March 13th Owens traveled to Oklahoma City and took her complaints to the office of Governor Brad Henry, where Henry staffers recommended she hire a lawyer, and to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation where Owens found a favorable reception and sympathy for what her children had gone through. Owens was once again advised to hire an attorney and pursue legal action against all involved. An OSBI agent stated that in her view the finger printing for ‘missing kids’ sake was not a bad idea. Julie Owens previously had her children’s finger prints taken and carries them with her in her wallet.
In addition to contacting various private attorneys, Julie Owens has also been seeking the help of the American Civil Liberties Union which has indicated an interest in the case. A case which centers upon the violation of the civil rights of Owen’s sons on the part of both Talihina Schools and the Talihina Police Department.
An interesting twist developed in this scandal when Angela Rogers, who as Angela Ramsey left the employ of the Howe school under questionable circumstances in 1996 and is under fire as Angela Rogers ten years later in Talihina, was married to Poteau business owner Wesley Weaver this past weekend. This of course will further complicate the reporting of this scandal but we at Bubbaworld promise to not let the ‘name game’ befuddle us in our reporting duties and assure our readers that we will stay atop this widening scandal with additional reports as warranted.
