Deadly Day Care – Another DHS Failure
For example, on the day this report is being finalized for publication the in-home day care operated by Vicki Leigh Chiles is still listed on the DHS web site of approved day care facilities.
And this is the case:
Six weeks after Chiles allegedly admitted to DHS workers she hit a child repeatedly with a fly swatter.
Ten days after a warrant was issued for Vicki Chiles arrest on child abuse charges.
Nine days after Vicki Leigh Chiles was arrested for killing Joshua Minton.
And this two days after Vicki Leigh Chiles was charged with the first-degree murder of Joshua Minton.
Yet, according to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services web site, not only is Vicki Chiles day care still in business, Chiles herself is still an approved day care provider.
Hopefully some day soon DHS will get a clue and admit that Vicki Leigh Chiles is probably not a good choice of day care provider for any parent that wishes to see their child live to see tomorrow. But until they do, Vicki Chiles’ listing remains for the world to see on the official list of Tulsa day care providers approved by DHS.
Time and again, Oklahoma children have died the result of DHS bungling, bureaucracy and laziness. Now the name of Joshua Minton can be added to the list of other Oklahoma children such as Ryan Luke, Kelsey Briggs, Samuel Barber and William Barnard, all of whom died because someone at DHS did not do their job or did not do it in a timely manner.
As each new child death scandal wracks DHS, the agency makes excuses, promises to do better and then returns to hiding behind ‘confidentiality laws’ and the Oklahoma Legislature passes another bill named after the latest victim of the DHS and tells us things are going to get better.
Well, they don’t get better, as the tragic death of Joshua Minton so sadly demonstrates.
It way beyond time for a major house cleaning at the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and if the Oklahoma Legislature does not make it happen when its next session starts in February, 2008 then it is time we the voters of Oklahoma did some major house cleaning of the Oklahoma Legislature.
Otherwise it may be our child or our grandchild that becomes the next victim of a so called ‘child protection agency’ that can’t seem to find its own butt with both hands and a road map of Oklahoma, let alone protect the children of Oklahoma from the likes of Vicki Leigh Chiles…
