Candice (Candy) Woodruff Mug Shot

Candyce (Candy) Woodruff, wife of former Delaware County Sheriff Lenden Woodruff is currently lodged in the Delaware County jail, held on $250,000 bond on a charge of shooting with intent to kill. She is accused of twice shooting her husband on Sunday June 17th, 2007.

Earlier in that day, Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Woodruff home in Colcord on a domestic disturbance call. Candyce told deputies Steve Kendrick and Randy Osburn that Lenden Woodruff had been drinking, yelling and had slapped her in the face.

Kendrick’s report of the call indicates there were no physical marks present on Mrs. Woodruff. Candyce Woodruff reportedly told the deputies that she had no money, received $150 per-week in Worker’s Compensation and was “drinking most of that up”. The two deputies offered Candyce Woodruff $30 in order that she might travel to her mother’s home in Claremore. She reportedly declined their offer of financial assistance and the deputies left.

At approximately 5:15 pm, deputies returned to the Woodruff residence in response to a 911 call indicating that Lenden Woodruff had been shot. When deputies arrived they found a .22 caliber handgun on the floor about a foot from the couch on which Lenden Woodruff lay bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound. Candyce Woodruff told deputies that Lenden had shot himself in the stomach.

It is alleged that Candyce Woodruff twice told neighbor and Lenden Woodruff relative Ann Luper than she, Candyce, had shot Lenden Woodruff. Reportedly Ann Luper was inside the Woodruff residence when authorities arrived.

What is not apparent is whether it was Candyce Woodruff, Ann Luper or both that called 911.

A second “witness” to Candyce Woodruff’s admission to having shot her husband has come forward. Randel Raison, a court reporter in Houston, TX for whom Candyce Woodruff had been working for a few weeks claims he was speaking to Candyce when she shot her husband.

Delaware County District Attorney Eddie Wyant has confirmed that his office received a three-page written statement that appears to be identical to the one which Randel Raison sent to news media outlets.

Raison in his public statement claims:

When she answered the phone, she sounded intoxicated. She proceeded to tell me that “Lenden has been abusing me for years, and everyone knows it”, while she was whimpering and intermittently crying. Periodically, during our approximate 10-minute phone call, she would shout to Lenden “get away from me”.

Toward the very end of our conversation, I heard a loud ‘bang’.

Raison says that when he asked what had just happened that Candyce Woodruff said twice:

I just shot him.

Raison then asked, “Where did you shoot him?

To which Raison says Candyce Woodruff replied, In the heart.

Raison claims that Candyce Woodruff said that she’d used a .22-caliber pistol, before indicating she had to cut the conversation short and call 911 because “he’s bleeding all over the place”.

Raison says that later he called back and Candyce answered the phone, she said, I couldn’t take the abuse anymore, it has to stop. Raison indicates that when he asked if Lenden was still alive, Candyce said, I don’t know, I guess I shot him in the stomach instead of the heart, but the paramedics will be here soon enough.

Raison says that when he called the Woodruff home again, a few minutes later, that Candyce said, Lenden shot himself in the stomach. I can’t talk right now, I have to talk to the police.

Raison says that when he called a fourth time, someone identifying themselves as Ann, indicated that Candyce was in the back of a police car under arrest.

One Response to “Ex-Sheriff Lenden Woodruff Shot – Wife Charged”

  1. In the end I believe it was self defense. She knew that trying to preserve her love and marriage would cost her health. After all this I hope he forgives her and cleans up. Wither or not she should take him back is her choice. Everyone gets a second chance in life some it takes a few. God knows I am not perfect. She shouldn’t have shot him but who knows maybe he shot himself. Especially when it comes to self defense. I heard once that you can actually shoot your own a** with a shotgun. get straight and fly right he once said.
