Sharon Kay Smith has been formerly sentenced to 40 years in prison for the abuse of a then 4-year-old Braggs, OK boy who is her great-nephew.

Smith was found guilty by a Sequoyah County jury in June of this year.

The jury recommend 40 years on each of three counts and a $5,000 fine. The judge at sentencing followed the jury’s recommendation, although justice would have been better served with the sentences run back-to-back rather than concurrent.

Even with concurrent sentences, it is likely that Smith, who is in her 50’s, will spend the rest of her life in prison and well she should for the wanton abuse of a child who will likely spend the rest of his life with both the physical and mental scares inflicted upon him by Smith, as well as other family members.

The boy’s mother Melanie Smith is currently serving a 16-year-sentence out of Muskogee County for child neglect.

Sharon Smith’s daughter Brenna Ann Smith and Melanie Smith’s reportedly half-brother/husband are facing trial on similar charges later this year.
