Shooting Speeders
On Labor Day, Mark Abshire, 37, was cuffed, stuffed and lodged in the Rogers County Jail, charged with shooting with intent to kill.
His alleged victim?
A speeder.

On Labor Day morning, Abshire allegedly took offense with a motorist speeding through his neighborhood, off state Highway 20 near Collinsville.
According to Rogers County deputies, when the motorist refused to slow down in response to Abshire’s verbal efforts, Abshire decided to try a different approach, went into his home retrieving a hand gun and chemical spray and waited for the driver to return.
Allegedly when the motorist returned, Abshire attempted to confront the driver, one thing led to another and Abshire shot the alleged speeder a couple of times which would obviously slow him down, at least for a while.
The shooting certainly slowed Abshire down for a while, as he’s cooling his heels in jail. No word on the condition of the shooting victim, although he was apparently not killed.
The Rogers County Sheriff’s offices says both men may have used alcohol and that may have played a factor in the incident…

Confrontation Over Speeding Leads To Shooting

What the report failed to mention was that the man got out of his car with three to four other men, as well as two other cars pulling up. Abshire yelled at them to “get off of his property, he had mace and a gun” several times, which neighbors witnessed to. The man was shot while attacking Abshire’s wife. It was self defense.
KIM,
1st of all, what normal person has mace and a gun while sitting in their front yard. If Mark was so concerned about kids in the neighborhood don’t you think that is dangerous???? You don’t take the law into your own hands, you call the police. Also, don’t forget, if your buddy Mark didn’t spot light, throw rocks, and yell and cuss at the car passing they would have never stopped. Also, I think his wife is the one who attacked 1st. If you want the respect a woman deserves then act like a lady. Now your buddy is in jail, DHS is investigating if Melissa’s kids are safe in their home that he was supposively trying to protect. Sounds like a good
way to handle things to me. You must be about as stupid in their thinking as he was. You should have the cell next to him. You would probablly look good in orange, shackles, and chains too.
KIM:
Were you an eyewitness to all of your statements that you made? Abshire will certainly need your if you were help now in court! If you weren’t an eyewitness, then you probably should do your research or shut up as it is obvious you don’t know the facts. Abshire will have his day in court and maybe then you will learn what the real facts are. This is a terrible tragedy for both families and people like you should respect that by keeping your embelished stories to yourself. Abshire was obvoiusly looking to
hurt someone or he would have done what most “normal” people do and let the police handle it. I guess now he has a hard lesson to learn!
This man was not shot because he was speeding. He and three cars full of people returned to the scene after the police had been called about their speeding and threats. Once they threaten the people on the own property with burning their house down they were told not to approached any closer or these people would defend them selves. After 6 men physically attacked the homeowner and two small women on private property they were dealt with an appropriate response. Once you threaten someones family use lose the right for anyone to feel pity for the outcome. Stop hiding behind misguided media reports and take responsibilty for your misguided and criminally minded family and friends.
As for Michelle Abshire being little that is a joke. Obiously you’ve never seen her. As for Michelle why don’t you tell the truth about how you hid the gun a month before this horrific incident, from Mark because you were afraid! No threats were made on anyones family except the man that was shot. The threat was the moment Mark Abshire chose to spotlight a passing vechicle, throw rocks at it and scream obscentities. What the hell did he expect the driver to do after that wave and go on! That man Mark Abshire shot is now permanently paralyzed and has four young children at home. HE DID NOT DESERVE TO BE SHOT. As for pity HE doesnt need pity he just needs JUSTICE. He never would have been in the street in front of the Abshire house of horrors had Marks actions not warranted it. Macing people is such a manly thing to do he was protecting his yellow bellied behind after he started something that is utterly ridiculous. Had there been any real danger for the Abshire family, when you went in and suppossedly retrieved the weapons why not stay in the house behind locked doors and wait for the police to get there? Why did you all go out into the yard again? Maybe lies again?
These ridiculous personal attacks are not helping the “victim’s” support team gain any credibility. Her first name isn’t even right! If you can’t get her name right, how do you know she hid anything?
In order to protect this family who was forced to fend for themselves because it took law enforcement way too long to arrive, I will not make any specific comments. All I will say is that the media completely smeared Mark, (The Owasso Reporter couldn’t even correctly report the amount of his bail and this can be easily proven through court records online), those who don’t know what happened are buying into it, and those of us who know the Abshires cannot wait for the truth will come out. They have an incredible amount of support from numerous members of the community.
I agree with the previous post. Obviously, Silent Neighbor No More doesn’t know the Abshire family since Mrs. Abshire’s name is not even correct. I too question how it is “known” that “Michelle” hid the gun from Mark. Sounds like idle gossip or inflammatory remarks from the other side. Also, the details in that post are incorrect as far as who threw even what! And, if someone threatens to burn your house down, would you really go back inside to give criminals the opportunity to get any closer when law enforcement is nowhere near to help? Mark Abshire is a very intelligent, reasonable man, and he took appropriate steps to warn these criminals that he would defend himself. What you call “yellowbelly” as far as macing goes, is an intelligent step that people who do not have a criminal mind will take in defending themselves.
Silent neighbor knows all they need to know about the Abshire family and is very gratful they no longer reside in OUR neighborhood because we don’t want people like that living here. It was a great place before they moved in and even better now they are gone. There is justice for this neighborhood.
Maybe because Michelle told her trusting neighbor she hid the gun from him. Maybe “Mrs Abshire” will learn to keep her mouth shut.
Mark will need all the support he can get when his new address becomes The Oklahoma State Penitentary. He is such an intelligent person that he no longer is employed as an assistant manager at a well known Corporation because they wanted to distance the Corporation from this lunatic. Obviously they didnt support this intelligent person.
If he was defending himself why did he start the ordeal in the first place? Let’s not forget who shined a spot light, had a can of mace and a gun outside! Were these speeders armed. If we all behave as Abshire did that night we would have a lot less young people in this world speeding through our streets. The law does not allow one to shot speeders as Mark so graciously did.
This is “normal” behavior.
I apoligize for typing michelle it should be Melissa Gorrell Miller Abshire
The comments about being a “lunatic” and what is “normal” behavior are slanderous. The comments about someone telling someone that Mark’s wife said that she hid the gun from him do not come across as credible, (look how many people that went through according to your post), and trying to tie intelligence into his employment is plain nasty and pointless. Also, most people would agree that telling a speeder to slow down in a residential neighborhood is not “starting something”. If you don’t want people like the Abshire’s in your neighborhood, what you are implying is that people who have no respect for speed limits and private property are behaving in an acceptable manner. If that is the case, many of us are glad that the Abshires don’t live there either.
Also, Mark was not sitting outside on a summer night with a handgun and pepper spray at his side just waiting for an excuse to use them. The media is completely responsible for this yellow journalism and it will come out that Mark only retrieved his weapons, (which is all legal), when he saw that the situation was escalating. The laws that were broken were by the aggressors, (speeding, verbally threatening the family, trespassing, and assault and battery). The Abshires were on their property the entire time and warned this group that they were armed. (Legally, I might add.) The aggressors are the ones who escalated this whole thing and are responsible for the outcome. It’s interesting that those who support them have not even commented on their, (the aggressors’), responsbility for any of this.
Also, justice will not be for the neighborhood. The only people who are involved in this are the agressors and the people who were put in the position of defending themselves. We all have a responsibility to stick to the facts.
Silent neighbor no more probably needs to reconsider becoming “silent neighbor” again. Abraham Lincoln said it best-
“Better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”
No doubt that you have an axe to grind, or even a personal interest in the case… maybe even a relative. That’s another fact that the papers left out- the man who was shot has several relatives that live in the same neighborhood.
It also left out the past dealings with the law that the “victim” (trespasser and criminal assaulter ware better terms) has had. Just go to the public website, http://www.oscn.net, and check it out. He has had a protective order against him, child endangerment charges, reckless endangerment charges, forcible entry and detainer charges, and several other charges. While you are at the website, why don’t you put Mark Abshire’s information in… you’ll find out that other than having a problem with his fraternity dues and a divorce, you won’t see anything else.
As for the mocking comment about it being a “manly” thing to do to mace someone, you might want to rethink that stupid logic as well. What’s more manly- macing someone who is attacking you and two women, or showing up with 5 friends to attack one guy. True, it probably took six of them put together to equal one complete man, but still, hey, it was 6 guys against one.
Nobody is happy the guy got shot, or that he is paralyzed. But “sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.” The truth is if he felt wronged by Mark spotlighting him, then they should have called the law. We live in a civilized society, and you don’t take 5 of your buddies and go to the man’s house to whip his butt. That’s what they use to do in the old west… oh yeah, and in the old west, when they did that, the one guy would usually defend himself, his home and his family with a gun.
Yippe kai Yaa, cowboy.
Thank you, Hard Truth for saying everything that many have wanted to say, and to have said it so well. Robby does have a criminal record and reputation in this community and he certainly made a bigger mess this time.
You are right; no one is happy that this shooting happened or that someone is paralyzed. However, Robby created the situation and still would not demonstrate self-restraint when Mark let him know that he was armed and would protect himself. Mark did everything within the law and played by the rules as he always does.
It is obvious that Silent Neighbor No More is a bit more than a neighbor. The comments on these posts are vengeful, vindictive and demonstrate a dispresectful and inflammatory mentality. It speaks volumes that they have not taken responsibility for any of their actions. They have experienced consequences for their actions this time and they don’t like it. They had multiple opportunities to make the choice to behave themselves, but refused and chose to continue to break law after law.
The manner in which Mark’s wife’s name has been openly placed on this site is disconcerting. What exactly was the point with that? How long did it take them to find out her name so that they could post it in a totally separate post? Oh, maybe they had to get 6 people together to figure that one out; it just took longer this time…
Should we bring up Robby’s family’s name as well? This guy who does have a criminal record has enjoyed privacy while the Abshires, none of whom have a criminal history, have been wrongfully dragged through the mud.
Once again, Mark and his family have numerous people behind them who know that they are telling the truth and are not falling for the false media reports.
Oh, and I might mention there are plenty of people in the neighborhood who feel that the wrong family moved out…
I think that I need to re-phrase my comment about how “they, (the aggressors), were given multiple opportunities to make the choice to behave themselves…”. I should have been less passive and stated that Mark gave them multiple opportunities to slink back under the rock they came out from.
…but you don’t. i do, and this behavior from mark is typical. he is a very angry person, and it sucks that once again, someone suffers his wrath. at the end of the day, you don’t get to just shoot people. damn it, run into your house, lock the door, call the cops, and say a prayer. i’ve read that the cops have been called and nothing came about it. praps the energy should have been focused on the police, and made some calls regarding their negligence to the community. it’s sad mark lost his job, he worked extremely hard to get where he was. and it sucks that he lost his house, i remembered hearing how proud he was to have finally been a home owner. but hopefully this will make him breath, relax and realize some people are idiots and let God deliver the consequences.
if you all only knew…Maybe if you know Mark to be angry you should call the Rogers County district attorneys office and help the guy that got shot get justice. Before Mark hurts another innocent person. No family should go through what his family and him are going through. Mark doesnt deserve the chance to hurt another human being. What an accomplishment to be proud of….shooting an unarmed man in the back for speeding. What a big man it takes to do that. How proud he must be. It’s not sad he lost his job and home he has reaped what he sowed!
Silent neighbor no more is a total idiot! Do you seriously think it’s ok for 6 men to turn around and go to someone’s house looking for a fight b/c someone told them to slow down in a neighborhood??? How do you know these 6 men were unarmed? How does anyone know? Why didn’t they leave after the Abshire’s and their neighbors told them to get off their property? Why didn’t they leave after the 6 drunk “men” (and I use that term loosely) got maced? That only shows that Mr. Abshire didn’t want to shoot anyone, but you see your wife get thrown to the ground and hear men say they are going to KILL their family and burn their house down, what is one to do, when they didn’t listen and get off their property like they were told to. STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! As far as what a big man to shoot another for hurting his family: What an even bigger man to show back up to someone’s house with 5 other friends and hurt a woman and have 4 on 1 for a fight! Mr. Abshire and his family are the most loving, caring, family anyone would be lucky to know. They have had nothing but a great support team behind them and will continue to do so UNTIL he gets exonerated. We all hope this B.S. will be put behind the Abshire’s soon, so they can get their life’s back. As far as the Case family, betcha regret going back to their house now, huh?
Mark didn’t hurt an “innocent person”. He shot a criminal in self defense. You can continue to gloss over the facts as much as you want to, but it doesn’t change the facts which will come out in court.
The fact is that the shooting did not occur because of speeding, and this will be reiterated, (that means “said again”), on this site as often as necessary.
Let’s put this in sequence, (that means “in order”), again. The group who is clearly at fault, were doing their red neck thing prior to speeding through a residential neighborhood. They were yelled at to slow down and were so offended by being told to obey the law, that they came back and got out of their vehicles in front of the Abshire residence to harass them.
Their second mistake was to threaten the safety and lives of not only Mark’s wife and friends, but of the small children who were asleep in the house. Mark stated clearly several times that he was armed and for them not to come any closer. (By the way, Mark is trained and he knew exactly how to legally handle this situation as it was unfolding.) They knew before they ever trespassed that Mark had a gun. When they ignored Mark’s statements, he used pepper spray, not the gun, to get them to understand that when he said he would defend himself, he meant it. However, the ones who broke the laws were too ignorant, (and probably drunk which is a great combination), to “get it” that this was Mark’s second warning. They then made the decision to trespass and assault Mark, his wife and their guests on private property.
As far as “shooting an unarmed man”, it doesn’t matter if he was armed or not. Mark was clearly forced to defend himself and he had no way of knowing that someone who was stupid enough to attack would either be unarmed, or if they would take the gun from him and use it on him and/or his loved ones. Remember, they set the tone by threatening the safety and lives of Mark’s family and friends.
Let’s not leave out the fact that the shot in the back occurred after the first shot failed to stop the assault on Mark. Mark not only had to endure being kicked in the head, but know that his wife was being harmed at the same time. He had to free himself however he could to protect her and their children. Law enforcement was not there even though the call had been made to 911. What else was he supposed to do? (I don’t know, maybe red neck etiquette applies here. Please fill us in.)
As for Mark being an angry person, you’d better have facts to back that up. Since you “heard” how proud he was to be a homeowner, I doubt that you know him that well. Since no credence seems to be given to the law by this group, just look up the words “slander” and “libel”, (that would be in a dictionary), before you say anything else unfounded.
If you want character witnesses involved there will be a line of upstanding, law-abiding citizens in this community who would happily testify under oath for Mark’s character, (not that he needs it; he’s not the one with a rap sheet). He is above reproach and obviously has more support than you know. When Mark is on the stand, he will not be the one squirming in the seat because he acted appropriately and has told the truth from the start.
i knew mark, paperwork included. and i know, this will all end the way it’s suppose too.
If you all only knew…you’re right, this will all end the way it’s supposed to, in Mark’s favor, b/c he is totally innocent!
Some of the posts on http://www.topix.com/forum/city/claremore-ok might be interesting to look through. The “victim”s story is starting to unravel a bit, as they are being caught in some inconsistencies and are being scrutinized.
your dumb, you mean YOU”RE dumb.
Ummm…..ok? Freak.
Sorry: I am a total English geek, and could not resist this. Look through my post; I’m sure you’ll find mistakes in mine, too!
1) Quotation marks are used to acknowledge someone else’s written work or verbal statements. Quotation marks are NOT used to indicate possessive form.
2)Always begin a sentence with a capital letter
3) Never begin a sentence with a conjunction
4) When using the word suppose as an adjective, you are supposed to add the letter “d”.
either way, mark’s going to prison.
I’m not trying to be disrespectful at all; you just have touched on a point that I feel very strongly about, especially in this case.
What has really bothered me about this whole thing is, that Mark has been treated guilty until proven innocent, even though the Stand Your Ground Law applies and supports his actions.
Mark is a noble guy, though. If anyone can make a change with the way this law is enforced and the way cases such as this are handled in the future, he can.
How in the world do you know he’s going to prison? We do know is much nicer that I am, b/c I am trying to disrespectful! Obviously, you don’t know jack!
NOT GUILTY! Justice was served! The jury saw through the lies and the truth prevailed! Blessings to the entire Abshire family, now they can finally get their lives back!
Two words “Not Guilty” on all counts.
you have to ask yourself the question though: if mark abshire was protecting himself and his family, why was he arrested at all? obviously the police officers thought he was in the wrong or he would have never gone to jail. if you were truly shooting someone in self defense, you would not go to jail. the law enforcement officers are appointed as such because they know the law and they are there to enforce the law. seems like there is a contradiction if the police thought he was guilty and arrested him and the court thought he was innocent and turned him loose. kinda funny isn’t it. but, he will get his in due time because karma is a b****.
If someone threatens to burn your house down and kill everyone in it are you supposed to wait for that to happen before you do anything to prevent it? In todays world it is not uncommon for a person to have some form of self defense on their person, be it pepper spray, gun, and or a knife. I have to say I have all three. I live on a culdesac and if someone was speeding down my road I would ask them to stop. If said person got out of their vehicle and told me that I have messed with the wrong people they would be very suprised that it would be exactly the opposite, they have messed with the wrong people. Stand up for yourself America!! Quit letting unruly thugs run our neighborhoods. And to the person that thinks the police officers know all their is to know about law let me inform you that to be a police officer in Rogers County all you have to be is 23 years old and a high school graduate. I hardly think that the police are equipped with the full knowledge of the law. I would like to state that a police officer is grossly under paid and that being a police officer is as dangerous of a job as it gets!! That being said, let’s let the judges and lawers determine the law. Congratulation Mark Abshire!!!!!!!!
The guy Mark Abshire shot should have thought out the outcome a little better. He has 4 children that should learn from their fathers mistake. Hopefully the guy that was shot will be a spokesperson for what not to be. He could be a very influential person in the devolpment of troubled young peoples lives.
NOT GUILTY-NOT GUILTY-NOT GUILTY!!
Yes, karma ia B*****, but it was the alleged victim who got deal with it, not Mark. Apparently you didn’t hear about the OHP officer dashboard camera saying it was obviously self defense. Once again due some research.
