One less maniac with a gun and badge running around down here. Let&#039;s hope he gets closer to the maximum than the minimum. Yeah, right.</description>

• Former Sawyer Police Chief to Face Federal Charges

By Andy Castelano
Assistant Editor Hugo Daily News
CHOCTAW COUNTY — A former Sawyer Chief of Police has been indicted on federal charges stemming from allegations he sexually assaulted a motorist during a May 2007 traffic stop.
Coke Douglas Makerney will face charges of deprivation of rights under color of law and possession of firearm during commission of a felony, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Sheldon J. Sperling.
It was unclear Thursday when Makerney will be arraigned or if he will be arrested. Sperling was not available for comment Thursday morning.
Makerney is accused of stopping a woman from Texas Friday, May 25, 2007, and raping the woman.
The first count of the indictment carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines, the second count carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Sawyer Mayor Anna Bennett said Makerney deserves his day in court, but the accusations alone have cast a shadow on the town.
&quot;We regret that there was even cause for the allegations to be made,&quot; Bennett said. &quot;The town of Sawyer demands the utmost of professionalism from our officers. We&#039;ve since adopted policies and procedures designed to protect the rights of anyone who comes into contact with our department.&quot;
Makerney was placed on administrative leave immediately following the incident and resigned from the force the next week, Bennett said. The town of Sawyer has since &quot;turned the police department upside down,&quot; according to Bennett, hiring a new chief of police and, recently, a second officer.
&quot;I&#039;d like people to know that we care about this situation,&quot; Bennett said.

end article

The residents of Choctaw County may finally be safe now that this animal is no longer a member of law enforcement in the area. From his days as a Hugo City Police Officer where he was asked to leave, to being a jailer at the Choctaw County Jail where again he was asked to leave, until now where his propensity to molest and rape have finally resulted in his messing with someone of enough prominence to get him in trouble and this good ole boy cop community not able to save his hide...we will hope.

Of course he is free. On house arrest and wearing an ankle bracelet. Nice gig if you can get it.

What ya gotta say about it, Bubba?

&lt;em&gt;Well....

Actually, I&#039;ll include the links to the new reports from:

The Hugo Daily News - http://www.hugonews.com/Story%201.html

KXII.com has a bit of a report - http://www.kxii.com/home/headlines/11277246.html

And KTEN.com - http://www.kten.com/Global/story.asp?S=7333230

I don&#039;t know how long, if at all, the Hugo Daily News archives their reports, KTEN archives for at least a couple of years.

And I would not be surprised to see something published here also.
Wouldn&#039;t be surprised at all. ;-)
