What will $62 million get you?
For starters, $62 million will get you a scandal plagued university in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
It may also get you the biggest surprise of your life, if you paid $62 million for it.
To the surprise of few, if any, the Board of Regents of Oral Roberts University jumped at the opportunity to get the scandal plagued university out of debt instantly by taking Mart Green up on his offer of $62 million dollars for Oral Roberts University.
What had been a lost cause, floundering in over $50 million in debt until Green’s cash infusion came along, is now rolling in money and Mart Green, whose family owns Hobby Lobby and Mardel’s, has got himself a university play with for a while.
Granted one with a bad reputation, a slew of lawsuits pending against it and a heck of a debt load but with a $62 million cash infusion to pay off about $52 million in debt, odds are that Green can keep Oral Roberts University, or whatever he decides to call it, afloat for a little while longer.
That is until Oral Roberts, the person who founded and who to the best of my knowledge still owns the university that bears his name, decides to pull the rug out from under everyone, sell out, pocket the money and walk off.
Could or better yet would Oral Roberts doing something like that?
Who knows, except Oral Roberts?
But…
Oral Roberts is the guy that said he had visits from a 900-foot-tall Jesus, was going to be “called home” if the faithful didn’t raise enough money to save his life and who some folks say has claimed to have raised the dead.
With a guy like that, what is impossible?
Odds are Mart Green is going to find out in what will likely prove to be an expensive lesson.
A $70 million lesson…
